I Got the Fever

A little Spring fever going around these parts here in early January as I got a noon ride in with a half-dozen other earnest bikers, hitting some hills and feeling so good I didn't think twice about dropping my Boss. Funny, I had to work late again...

1968

40 years ago this spring a little suburban kid took off his training wheels and taught himself to ride. Mom was making dinner and Dad was at work and all his siblings were practically grown up. So he did. Like a condor picking up speed for flight, the plucky prepubescent pedaled while steadying himself against the side of his folk's oh-so-cool '66 T-Bird, accelerated, and by time he cleared the syncopated tail lights of the classic Ford, was alone free in space, away from the lumbering adults and above the fray of his previous pedestrian confines, wind through his mop-top, he felt the winged inspiration of Pegasus, but like Icarus had no real sense of balance and crashed (as planned) into the zoysia.
You'd think that after 40 years this stumpy man would be more than a Cat 4...
